How does nerds playing 2K or people watching 2K help the NBA's bottom line? I understand the marketing part which the NBA never has a problem with.
It seems like they are trying to get these young basement dwellers involved in the NBA but these aren't the kinds of customers the NBA wants to serve?
As ridiculous as it sounds, this is a brilliant move by the NBA. Esports, yes that’s a no actual thing, is blowing up. Revenue of 800M globally and expected to double in less than 24 months. The growth is outlandish compared to the entertainment industry as a whole. I believe there were over 11 billion esports videos streamed in 2017, with the majority coming from China and Japan, and that figure is expected to rise significantly as North America figures explode. People even pay for this, online or to go to live events. I believe Staples sold out an event recently and sold out events are common in Asia.
This is why Amazon paid over a billion for Twitch, Facebook, Google and others are introducing esports platforms, Sky is close to a huge deal on an esports platform and Vegas has two arenas dedicated to esports set to open soon.
As absurd as this all sounds, it’s the truth.
